In order to establish yourself as the "Pack Leader", the dog must learn to Follow!
A list of Do's and Don'ts
Don't use "retractable" leashes!
Most people who use these are merely restricting how far the dog can go. If you were to remove the leash, the dog is gone! If you insist on using this type of leash, keep it short during the walk! The dog should follow you (Migrate) to the new location, then you may let the leash out to let the dog explore.(a treat!)
Don't let the dog get ahead of you!
In your dog's mind he/she is currently the pack leader! You are the follower! If you ever hope to correct any dog problem, you need to be respected by the dog as "Pack Leader!"
Do Keep the dog at your side or behind you!
Again, your dog needs to learn to Follow!
Do Stop often and change your pace.
By doing this you are training your dog to react to you! Remember what I said earlier??? The pack leader moves, the pack follows!
